Worship Ministries

So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us work for the good of all, and especially for those of the family of faith. - Galatians 6:10

Serving at the altar is a way to draw closer to Jesus, which in turn enables us to open ourselves to others, to journey together, and to reflect the transforming love God to the world through our lives. There are many ways to serve in the worship service; from singing in the choir and reading scripture to the more behind the scenes work fo the altar guild. If you are looking for your place in the parish family, then this might be for you.

Acolytes

One of the first ways in which children and adults can serve in worship is by serving as an acolyte. This ministry is open to anyone and no previous experience is necessary. This is an important ministry as acolytes lead the procession at the beginning and end of the service, and for the reading fo the Gospel. They also serve at the altar by assiting the priests and the Eucharistic Ministers. A training program is conducted with the priests and worship leaders for those who are interested.

Altar Guild

Members are responsible for preparing the altar for all services, keeping the linens clean, providing wine, wafers, candles, and purchasing new linens as they are needed. Funds for these come from donations and memorials given throughout the year as well as parish budget. The flower ministry is a major part of our responsibility with a chairperson who arranges for parishioners to donate for Sunday flowers as well as other special services and works directly with our local florist.

Eucharistic Ministers

Eucharistic Ministers assist with our worship services by proclaiming the Word of God through reading scripture and leading the congregation in prayer. They also serve alongside the clergy at the altar during Holy Communion. A regular program of education for this ministry is provided prior to certification.

Lectors

Lectors proclaim the Word of God through the reading of scripture during our worship services.

Prayer List

Ascension has an active Prayer List. The purpose of the prayer list is to offer daily prayer for those requesting prayers. If you have a prayer request or would like to be part of the group that offers prayers, please contact the church office.

Ushers

All members of the congregation have the opportunity to serve occasionally as ushers for Sunday services. Assignment is generally by family and children are encouraged to participate with their parents. Newer members of the parish are given time to become acquainted before being asked to serve as ushers. Instructions are located in the drawer of the table in the back of the sanctuary. Usher scheduling is included in the monthly newsletter, and email reminders are sent to participants the week before being scheduled.
